WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING IN TASSIE

The Dexter Cattle Promotion Group of Tasmania (DCAI) takes part in a number of major events to enable the public to familiarise themselves with Dexter Cattle. We also host a number of on-farm field days encouraging people to come and see Dexter cattle on their home turf.

The following reports and articles will give you an idea of what we have been up to and our Coming Events Calendar will give you a heads-up on planned events, meetings and field days.

Huon Small Farm Expo 2017

26th March 2017

The Huon Small Farm Expo was held this year on  the 26th March 2017

Our Group was represented by Mountain River Dexter Stud, below is a brief report.

Despite competing with the AFL and Grand Prix the Huon Small Farms Expo at

Ranelagh Show grounds at the end of March again attracted the crowds. Many

new hobby farmers came to our stall to discuss their future with Dexters.

Harlequin Cut, now an Expo veteran, lapped up the attention with her red

calf Jezebel alongside her. Dale Latham and Sue Crawford turned up to help.

And the sun shoneŠ

Monday Snow

17 August 2015

We had our second heavy fall of snow in two weeks this morning, Monday 17th August. When we went to check and feed the cows at 9.30am this morning we realised there was a cow missing. (We had forgotten we had a calf due in three days).

AGFEST 2015 a Great Success

2015

A big thank you to those Members listed below who helped out at AGFEST who helped to make it a success. Especially to Ian and Tanya for the great effort in the setup on the Wednesday under such terrible conditions, Cath for her effort and time put in with her 2 Heifers for the whole of Agfest they were terrific. They exhibited such calm temperments and dual purpose that the Dexter is known for and were a credit to the Breed.

It was a pleasure to be at Agfest for the 2 days and found that it is well worth the groups effort to exhibit at AGfest, the Friday would have had the most good enquiries and contacts even though the Saturday was the busiest day.

Also a big mention to Cath, Dave, Julie and Ron on the Saturday with their great help with the packing up, well done to you all For Agfest.

Dexter Steer Tops The Field

October 2014

“A Dexter X steer, weighing 445kg was awarded champion out of a field of 16 in the Rump and Loin carcass section, and then went on to win Reserve Champion steer on the hoof.  The judge said that this was a very well finished steer with excellent fat cover displaying all the signs of a steer that will hopefully grade well against the MSA grading table.” (Kyle Rattray – SHS Ag Teacher).

Daffodils, Divas, Dogs and Dexters.

October 26th, 2014

On October 26th, 2014  a Spring Festival at Clarendon House included a display of Dexters (thanks to Tazhunt Dexers who helped out with very short notice). This created a lot of interest from the public that came to enjoy the plant stalls, opera singers, West Highland Terrior races and the lovely surroundings at Clarendon House. It was a wonderful day, very relaxing, and a great way to promote the breed to many people who had not heard of Dexters, but soon learnt to love them!
