Sheffield Show Hoof and Hook Competition

Sheffield Show Hoof and Hook Competition

Three Dexter X Angus steers were entered by the Scottsdale High School Cattle Handlers Team in 2014 in the Sheffield Hoof and Hook competition, just as a matter of interest. They did surprisingly well:

Scottsdale High School entered five angus steers and three Dexter Angus cross steers bred by Kywong Dexter Stud in the Hoof and Hook competition on 7th November.  The Dexter X steers weighed between 402 and 457 kg liveweight, aged about 20 months.  The Dexter X team was placed third, behind a Limousin team (first) and the School Angus team (second) from a selection of six breed teams.

“A Dexter X steer, weighing 445kg was awarded champion out of a field of 16 in the Rump and Loin carcass section, and then went on to win Reserve Champion steer on the hoof.  The judge said that this was a very well finished steer with excellent fat cover displaying all the signs of a steer that will hopefully grade well against the MSA grading table.” (Kyle Rattray – SHS Ag Teacher).

We received the final MSA point scores on the following Monday night, and often the animals judged to be champion son the hoof do not receive the highest score on hook once they are judged for meat pH, fat and meat colour, marbling age, rib and rump fat scores.  Unfortunately this steer didn’t score well, but one of the others received third in the heavy weights 261+ carcass section, with a score of 80.89. First and second were Limousins, scoring 88.52, 83.65 respectively.
